Average household energy use in the Netherlands
Statistics Netherlands (CBS) and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) estimate average use in 2026 at 928 m³ of gas and 1,747 kWh of net electricity per household. Here is how that average is built up and how your own use compares.
How to read this average
The gas average covers homes heated mainly with natural gas and is weather-corrected: it shows what a household would use in a normal year. The electricity average is net: what is taken from the grid minus what solar panels feed back. Without solar panels your electricity use is therefore often higher than this average.
Figures for 2025 and 2026 are PBL forecasts based on smart meter data and the Climate and Energy Outlook. Earlier years are measured.

Between 2019 and 2026, average gas use fell by 29% and net electricity use by 29%. CBS attributes this to households heating more sparingly when prices were high in 2022 and 2023, more homes being insulated or switching to a heat pump or heat network, and more households generating their own solar power.
Differences between homes
The average hides large differences. In 2024 a large, older detached house with two or more residents used on average more than three times as much gas as a small, new apartment with one resident.
| Profile | Gas (m³) | Net electricity (kWh) |
|---|---|---|
| Mainly electrically heated home | 280 | 2,080 |
| One resident, new small apartment | 550 | 1,350 |
| One resident, older small apartment | 690 | 1,390 |
| Two or more residents, older small apartment | 860 | 2,060 |
| One resident, older small terraced/semi-detached house | 850 | 1,190 |
| One resident, older medium terraced/semi-detached house | 1,010 | 1,340 |
| Two or more residents, older small terraced/semi-detached house | 1,000 | 1,920 |

'Older' means built before 1992, 'small' up to 100 m² and 'large' 150 m² or more. Terraced/semi-detached covers mid-terrace, end-of-terrace and semi-detached houses. What this means for the energy bill is shown under energy costs by home type.
Finding your own use
Your actual annual use is on your annual statement. If you don't have it to hand, read your meter twice and convert it with the annual usage calculator.
