Annual usage from meter readings
Want to know how much electricity or gas you use per year, but don't have your annual statement to hand? Note two meter readings with their dates and convert them.

How we calculate
- Usage = second reading − first reading
- Per day = usage ÷ number of days between the two dates
- Annual estimate = usage per day × 365, rounded to whole units
Example: on 1 March 2026 the meter reads 12,000 kWh, on 1 June 12,450 kWh. That is 450 kWh in 92 days, 4.89 kWh a day, and an estimated 1,785 kWh a year.
Mind the seasons
This calculator extrapolates linearly, as if you used the same amount every day. For gas that is not true: you heat far more in winter than in summer. A summer measurement will therefore significantly underestimate your annual use, a winter measurement will overestimate it. Electricity use varies too, for example due to lighting, a heat pump or solar panels. For a reliable estimate, measure over at least a few months, preferably a full year.
Comparing with the average
CBS and PBL estimate average use in 2026 at 1,747 kWh of net electricity and 928 m³ of gas per household. That average is net (after solar feed-in) and for gas covers homes heated with natural gas. Read more about differences between homes under average energy use.
