How we calculate

• kWh per day = power in watts ÷ 1,000 × hours per day
• kWh per year = kWh per day × days per year
• Cost per year = kWh per year × price per kWh

Example: a 100-watt appliance that is on 5 hours a day uses 100 ÷ 1,000 × 5 = 0.5 kWh a day, and 182.5 kWh a year. At the CBS average price of €0.25555 per kWh (July 2026) that costs €46.64 a year.

Why the result may differ

The power on the rating plate is usually the maximum. Many appliances do not draw it continuously: a fridge or washing machine cycles on and off, a TV's use depends on brightness. The calculator then gives an upper bound. For more accuracy, measure with a plug-in energy meter, or take the annual kWh figure from the energy label and enter it in the electricity cost calculator.

Standby use counts too: a device drawing a few watts day and night uses tens of kWh over a year. Enter 24 hours a day for that.
